Where does farming begin?

When a product is described as farmed, which stages of its life do you imagine taking place under human care? Raising wild-caught juveniles and connecting generations in captivity are not identical processes.

Kindai University’s 2023 announcement describes obtaining larvae from broodstock raised from artificial seed as achieving complete-cycle aquaculture. The distinction brings separate tasks into view: obtaining juveniles, raising them and developing the capacity to produce the next generation.

Research comes with a date.

Research progresses, so an older explanation should not automatically stand in for the present. In May 2026, Japan’s Fisheries Research and Education Agency and partners announced a trial sale of kabayaki made from eels raised from artificially produced seed.

The announcement describes a particular project and trial. It does not establish that all eel farming has switched to complete-cycle production, or that a producer of your choice uses the same approach. The scope of a result matters as much as its headline.

Questions worth keeping.

Here are editorial suggestions for reading a producer’s information: Which species is raised? At what life stage does its farming begin? Which growing and processing stages does the business carry out itself? Keep unanswered questions visible rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.

Short labels such as “farmed” or “Japanese” are not, by themselves, evidence for every possible claim about quality or sustainability. Product-specific disclosures and the scope of records or tests deserve attention too.

Return the word to the work.

A research achievement is different from an individual producer’s practice. This remains true for businesses related to this journal. This draft does not claim that Kosa’s eel farm or KATANA UNAGI carries out complete-cycle aquaculture.

Firsthand accounts require firsthand verification. For now, this is an entry point into published sources. Future reporting should make clear which processes were actually observed and which remain unverified.
